The Social Emotional Teaching Pyramid

Pyramid

The Social Emotional Teaching Pyramid was created by the Center on the Social
Emotional Foundation for Early Learning (CSEFEL, 2005) and the Technical Assistance
Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children (TACSEI, 201 lb) to
provide a teaching approach to address social and emotional learning in young children.
The Teaching Pyramid claims it focuses on promotion of social-emotional development
and prevention of challenging behaviors.
The Teaching Pyramid can provide promotion and prevention of social-emotional skills
through a framework teachers can utilize with all children. The framework consists of
four tiers; (1) building positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues; (2)
designing a high-quality supportive environment; (3) using social-emotional supports and
teaching strategies; and (4) planning intensive individualized interventions.

Research on implementation of the Pyramid Model shows:

  • Children have better social skills and less problem behavior in Pyramid Model classrooms.
  • Teachers are able to implement Pyramid Model practices better if they receive training and practice-based coaching.

Florida and Tennessee Randomized Study of 2011

The study was conducted within public school classrooms enrolling preschool children with disabilities in Florida and Tennessee.

Research Findings

  • Teachers in the experimental condition who received training and coaching demonstrated statistically significant differences in their implementation of Pyramid Model practices.
  • Children enrolled in the experimental classrooms implementing the Pyramid Model demonstrated statistically significant differences in their social skills.
  • Target children in the experimental classrooms had statistically significant reductions in problem behavior.

These findings have been published.  See the following article for more information:
