Imagine that you want to create a developmentally appropriate curriculum for preschoolers. What would be your main goals to include the frame of your curriculum and what kind principals would you put forward to implement those goals in this curriculum?
First off all, my main goal would be to support children’s development in all areas like socio emotional development, motor development, language development, cognitive development and so on. All areas would be equally important for my curriculum. Likewise, I would aim to support each child based on their individual differences. I would pay attention to create a flexibility in my curriculum to be able to adapt to children’s different developmental paces. I would emphasize individual differences and children’s interests. This way, I would give enough space to modify curriculum based on children’s needs and interests.
In my curriculum, new knowledge would be build upon existing knowledge of children. This way, children could learn better. I would ask children questions to make them think about different ideas and let them discover the knowledge through their own experiences. I would give importance to provide meaningful experience plans to children so that children would feel it is worthy to join in. As a teacher, I would also be a part of all these experiences, not only as an instructor, but also as a team member. I would encourage children to try new things and sometimes provide opportunities for them to initiate these new experiences.
Additionally, in my curriculum, I would provide both achievable and challenging experiences for children. I would make encouraging comments on the process, not the result. Children would have enough free play times and I would support these times by creating meaningful enviroments, making observations on children and engaging in their plays. I would include outdoor experiences and make sure children have enough space to practice physical activities.
I would make sure that I support a multicultural environment and antibias curriculum approach. I would aim to care about cultural appropriateness of my curriculum and know enough about family background. I would use family involvement activities and make family a part of my curriculum. I would take families’ wishes into consideration too and work with them as a teamwork.
